The Caspian Sea: formerly troubled waters?

Citazione:What does a recent legal agreement to give the Caspian Sea a special status mean for the regional military balance? While the agreement should reduce regional tensions, it also serves to preserve Russia’s dominance, explains Yvonni-Stefania Efstathiou.

The five states bordering the Caspian Sea – Azerbaijan, Iran, Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan and Russia – have agreed a ‘Convention on the Legal Status of the Caspian Sea’. Although requiring ratification, the deal prevents the military deployment in the sea of any vessel not belonging to a signatory party. This, in effect, cedes control of the Caspian to Moscow, which had opposed an alternative solution based on national coastlines that would have limited its military presence to the northwest of the sea. A number of outstanding issues, however, need to be resolved, including those concerning the maritime borders of some of the signatories...

Georgia presidential vote goes to second round runoff: Election Commission

Citazione:Georgia’s presidential election will go to a second round runoff between two of the country’s former foreign ministers after no single candidate won outright in the first round of voting, the country’s Central Election Commission (CEC) said on Monday.
After all the votes from Sunday’s first round of voting had been counted French-born former diplomat and foreign minister Salome Zurabishvili had secured 38.7 percent of the vote, while Grigol Vashadze, also a former foreign minister, had won 37.7 percent of the vote, the CEC said.
With neither managing to get more than 50 percent of the vote necessary to win outright, a runoff between Zurabishvili and Vashadze will now be held sometime between now and Dec. 2...

Russia, India & Iran want to create alternative trade route to Suez Canal – report

Citazione:Officials from India, Iran, and Russia are going to meet next month to negotiate a large joint project aimed at launching a new cargo transport corridor that could become a cheaper and shorter alternative to the Suez Canal.
The new shipment passage, North-South Transport Corridor (INSTC), is set to connect the Indian Ocean with the Persian Gulf through Iran to Russia and Europe, according to Iranian state-owned news outlet Press TV. The 7,200-kilometers long corridor will combine sea and rail routes.
“The INSTC is the shortest multimodal transportation route linking the Indian Ocean and Persian Gulf via Iran to Russia and North Europe,” India’s Ministry of Commerce and Industry said in a statement, adding that trilateral talks between the parties are scheduled on November 23.
The route will make it possible to deliver cargoes from India to the Iranian port of Bandar Abbas. Then, the goods will be transported by land to Bandar Anzali, Iran’s port on the Caspian Sea. After that, goods will be shipped to the Russian southern port of Astrakhan, from where they will move to Europe by rail.
The new transport artery will potentially reduce the time and costs of shipping by up to 40 percent. Transport time between Mumbai and Moscow will reportedly be reduced to 20 days. Annual capacity of the transport artery is expected to reach 30 million tons...
